Math Placement Testing

Which Test(s) Should You Take?

Mathematics Placement Test - Take this test if you have scored less than 520 on your SAT Math test (or less than 22 on your ACT Math test), unless you have transfer math or AP math credit hours. The test has 25 multiple choice questions for which you have 30 minutes to complete. Calculators may be used, see note on the right.

Calculus Readiness Test - Take this test if you are planning to major in computer science, mathematics, pre-engineering, or science. You do not have to take this test if you have Calculus I (MAT 1110) credit either through AP or college credit. The test has 30 multiple choice questions for which you have 30 minutes to complete.

About the Tests

These computer based tests will help us place you in the best class for your major with respect to your mathematics background. Based on your performance on the test, an academic advisor will identify the course(s) that fulfill your major requirements and maximize your potential for success.

Calculator Use

You may use a calculator, but not one having a "computer algebra system" such as a TI-89 or 92. Work quickly, but carefully and do not guess answers. Guessing can inflate your score and lead to an inappropriate placement. For clarification on math placement policies, you may contact the Dept of Mathematical Sciences at 828.262.3050

Before You Start

Need a Browser Tune-up?

You must be using a supported browser to complete the Math Placement Test. Conduct the Browser Tune-up to ensure that you are using a supported browser. It includes step-by-step instructions to make sure your browser settings are optimized for the Math Placement Test.

Check Your Connection Speed

Take the exam on the fastest internet connection available. Avoid using a dial-up modem. It is too slow and frustrating. Good places to take the test are your school's computer lab and  your public library.

Avoid Getting "Timed Out"- Log out of AppalNET

If you are currently logged into AppalNET, you must log out of AppalNET and then close all your browser (Netscape or Internet Explorer) windows. If you are not currently logged into AppalNET, you may disregard this step.

If you take the test from in AppalNET or any browser window opened while logged into AppalNET, you may be "timed-out", that is, your access is frozen and you cannot complete the test. If this happens, please contact Patty Dale in the Registrar's Office at 828-262-8023 (daleph@appstate.edu) to reset your test.

Don't Forget to Save Your Answers!

After completing each question, click "Save Answer". While you take the test, a status box will appear to the right of the window - in it you will have a timer and indicators of whether your answers have been properly saved (they will be checked, if they have been).
